Distance Learning Program

DEGREES The nationally recognized Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers distance learning Masters of Science degrees in three areas:

Environmental Science and Engineering This curriculum is designed for students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in the physical or life sciences. Students may select courses in a variety of environmental disciplines.

Civil and Environmental Engineering This curriculum is designed for students with undergraduate engineering degrees. Courses are offered in environmental chemistry, water/ wastewater treatment, water quality management, air quality engineering, solid and hazardous waste management, and public health engineering.

Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering The Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering program is based on two ideas. First, engineers are responsible for life-cycle of the designed system. Second, engineers must be capable of optimizing the total system performance of large-scale public work projects, including their social and environmental impacts, in a way that addresses the critical issues of infrastructure behavior, deterioration science, and structural rehabilitation. As a result, the infrastructure program maintains pedagogical and practical links to Environmental Engineering and Systems Engineering.
SUPPORTING COURSES
Students participating via distance learning in any of the Department’s graduate degree and certificate programs will be able to complete classes in four major areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering. These include construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, civil infrastructure systems, and advanced transportation systems. Courses in geographical information systems, water/wastewater treatment practices, intelligent transportation systems, infrastructure assessment and rehabilitation, and construction control methods represent typical offerings.
CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
A Certificate of Advanced Studies program is offered within several areas of study. Students already possessing an M.S. degree or just interested in taking a few courses may apply for a certificate program. Certificates are awarded after successful completion of four graduate level courses in one of the option areas. Students interested in an interdisciplinary M.S. degree may take 4-5 courses from the Civil Engineering Department towards the M.S. in Systems Engineering.
STUDENT POPULATION
Most Virginia Tech students in the distance learning program are working professionals seeking to update their skills and knowledge. Classes are conveniently scheduled in the late afternoon and evening to accommodate students’ workday schedules. Companies, government, and students recognize advanced education as an attractive investment in human resources. Upgraded skills and proficiencies are vital to competing within the context of the technological revolution and today’s increasingly global economy.
