The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce that Department Head Bill Knocke is the recipient of the 2009 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) Leadership Award. The award was presented at the annual American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) conference in Austin, TX.

The ExCEEd Leadership Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates superior leadership in the civil engineering profession and in civil engineering education. Col. Stephen Ressler, department head of civil and mechanical engineering at the US Military Academy, West Point noted, “Bill has been a very strong supporter of ASCE. He has been very active in educational activities. He has been a long-time member of the Department Heads Executive Council and has been a real leader on the DHEC. When many people come to the table with their own [local] concerns, Bill is the one to look past that…and brings everyone to a decision that is in the best interest of the profession, not just our individual organizations. That's the hallmark that has made Bill Knocke such a tremendous contributor to our program.” He went on to describe Knocke as “an absolute exemplar of leadership in our profession.”

Dr. Knocke will step down as CEE department head this August after 15 years in the position.
