Virginia Tech
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions effective August 2010. One of these positions is geared towards a faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program (CEM); the other position is geared towards a faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Structural Engineering and Materials Program (SEM). A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. The positions are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor rank, however junior Associate Professor level appointments may be considered for outstanding candidates. These positions are part of a multi-year, Department-wide thematic cluster hire in the area of infrastructure and sustainability. Candidates with specific research expertise in resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems are particularly encouraged to apply. All faculty in the CEE Department are expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as to specialized graduate education, sponsored research, and scholarly work. A successful candidate in the area of Construction Engineering and Management will be able to teach mainstream CEM subjects as well as introduce graduate courses in the candidate's area of research expertise. Applicants should also have research expertise in a specific area of construction engineering, construction management, infrastructure engineering, or infrastructure management. A successful applicant will be appointed in the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program and will play a major role in the recently formed Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech. As such, a successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a critical mass of faculty and students who work across traditional boundaries, share learning environments and create a unified identity for excellence in construction education, research and outreach.
A successful candidate in the area of Structural Engineering and Materials will have a sound fundamental knowledge in the analysis, behavior, and design of steel structures. Exceptional candidates with expertise in other areas could also be considered. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), or completion of the FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable attributes.
