The Virginia Smart Road is a unique, state-of-the-art, full-scale research facility for pavement research and evaluation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) concepts, technologies, and products. It is the first facility of its kind to be built from the ground up with its infrastructure incorporated into the roadway.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a dedicated computing lab (CEECL) located in Patton Hall. This computer laboratory supports instructional, outreach, and research activities within the department, and provides software and hardware support for computers installed in the department.
